Meet The Maker - Ky Portrait

The Wavering Line was created in 2018 by artist Ky Novak (she/they) with the belief that all good things take time. Ky believes that one of the biggest advantages in being the sole person behind your jewelry production is to connect and share with you about her process. In doing so, the maker's hand is evident. Your jewelry is all made by hand and in some cases, it is made to order. The handmade process takes patience, but to know that each piece is "one-of-a-kind" makes it worth the wait.

After studying metals and working with/learning from a jewelry designer in high school, Ky has been a self taught jewelry maker with no additional formal training. Ky honed her design skills at Colorado State University, where they earned their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Art Education. As a multidisciplinary artist + an art educator, Ky found herself always coming back to jewelry making as a creative outlet. After years of tinkering with vintage pieces, metal findings, wire wrapping found stones and creating pieces from repurposed materials, Ky knew they needed to do something bigger with their creations.

Each item is handmade by Ky in their home studio. The artistic intention of Ky's work is to explore form, function and sustainability through wearable art and experimentation with color, shape and texture. She is heavily inspired by a variety of media including textiles, pottery and interior design and is equally drawn to Scandinavian aesthetic. Art historical eras, movements and artists are of great influence to Ky's work such as Bauhaus, Art Deco, mid-century design + architecture, and minimalism. She often references these influences subtly in her pieces striving for individuality and uniqueness.

THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME

THE WAVERING LINE

• • •

Ky named their brand "The Wavering Line" to pay homage to her artistic heroine, Margaret Kilgallen. It was inspired by her quote, "from a distance it might look straight, but when you get close up, you can always see the line waver...and I think that's where the beauty is."
-M.K.

Ky finds great appreciation in what they believe the quote to reveal regarding the artistic process and the internal dialogue some artists face when it comes to perfectionism.

Margaret Kilgallen was a contemporary artist during the 90's inspired by folk art, signage, letterpress printing, and freight train graffiti art. Her interest in craftsmanship, the evidence of the maker's hand, and the stories of everyday peoples' lives are present in her artwork and align with Ky's artistic perspective and views of the world.
