ABOUT THE WAVERING LINE

MEET THE MAKERS

KY & JOSH NOVAK

Hi folks! We’re Ky & Josh—
two multidisplinary artists throwing and hand-building our one of a kind ceramics in the Middle West.

Come for the mushie earrings and chimenea scenes and stay for the overall good vibes.

KY NOVAK

SHE/THEY

Ky created The Wavering Line in 2018 with the belief that all good things take time. What began as a solo endeavor (always with the full support of Josh), turned into what Ky had envisioned all along—combining both Ky & Josh's multidisplinary skillsets into a business that enveloped every creative thing they could ever dream up.

Ky believes that one of the biggest advantages in being the artist behind the work is to connect and share about their process. In doing so, the maker's hand is evident.

As a former art educator, and current graphic designer by day, Ky finds herself always coming back to the studio, using clay, metal, and fiber materials to build with her hands.

The artistic intention of Ky's work is to be present throughout the process. They explore form, function, and sustainability through wearable art, and often spend time experimenting with color, shape, and texture. She is heavily inspired by a variety of media including architecture, textiles, and interior design and is equally drawn to Scandinavian and folk art aesthetics. Ky often marches to the beat of her own drum—always striving for individuality and uniqueness in the pieces they create.

JOSH NOVAK

HE/HIM

Josh is The Wavering Line resident wheel-thrower, innovator extraordinaire, and is a self taught potter and ceramicist.

When he's not throwing on the wheel he's probably adding a handle to a mug or teapot, wedging clay, photographing new pieces for the website, editing a video, or taking a trip to the local pottery shop for a stoneware re-stock.

One of Josh's favorite pieces to create are his whimsical forest scenes featuring his incense chimeneas. Haven't seen one yet? Keep an eye out for one at our in-person markets. Charming, endearing, and full of whimsy, you don't want to miss getting your hands on one of these...Hurry, they go quick!

A big fan of the Beastie Boys, and a coffee enthusiast, you'll often find Josh with headphones in, sipping a latte, dreaming up his next brilliant idea.

THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME

THE WAVERING LINE

• • •

"The Wavering Line" pays homage to Ky's favorite artistic heroine, the late, Margaret Kilgallen. "The Wavering Line" was inspired by Margaret's quote, "from a distance it might look straight, but when you get close up, you can always see the line waver...and I think that's where the beauty is."
-M.K.

Ky finds great appreciation in what they believe the quote to reveal regarding the artistic process and the internal dialogue artists often face when it comes to perfectionism—seeing the raw emotion and imperfect mark making an artist's hand leaves behind within the work itself.

Margaret Kilgallen was a contemporary artist during the 90's inspired by folk art, signage, letterpress printing, and freight train graffiti art. Her interest in craftsmanship, the evidence of the maker's hand, and the stories of everyday peoples' lives are present in her artwork and align with The Wavering Line's artistic perspective and views of the world.
